How New Media Changed the Way I See Myself Online

Before I took Introduction to New Media, I honestly didn’t think much about the online world. I used to blog only when I felt like it, tweet without thinking and scroll through social media just to pass time. I thought this class would teach me how to use new apps or maybe how to edit content better. I didn’t expect it to touch my mindset or make me rethink the way I communicate online. But as the weeks went by, it felt like something inside me was slowly changing. I started seeing new media not just as entertainment, but as a real part of my life, something that shapes my thoughts and decisions.

1. One of the biggest things that became emotional for me was learning that blogging and tweeting were not as small as I once thought. I used to post things quickly, whatever crossed my mind. But in class, when I realized that every blog post or tweet is actually a form of publishing, something clicked inside me. It made me understand that my words carry weight. They travel, they reach people, they influence and sometimes they even stay online longer than I expect. This scared me a little but also made me feel stronger. It reminded me that my voice matters and I shouldn’t waste it. Since then, I’ve started thinking deeply about what I want to say and how I want to say it. Writing became more meaningful and tweeting felt less like a hobby and more like a reflection of who I am.

Another part that touched me was learning about social media campaigns. I used to see campaigns as just colorful posts, funny hashtags or challenges everyone jumped on without thinking. But when we studied how campaigns are created, the planning, the strategy and the emotions behind them, I began to understand their power. Social media campaigns can bring people together, educate, raise awareness, and change minds. They can make small voices louder and give communities a chance to be heard. This opened my eyes to how easily a single post can be part of a bigger movement. Now I don’t just scroll past campaigns. I pay attention. I ask myself what message they’re trying to spread and how I can be part of something meaningful.

Understanding the uses of new media also changed me emotionally. Before, I saw new media as a place for fun, music, memes and pictures. But in class, I learned that new media is also a place where people learn, work, build careers, tell their stories, and connect with the world. It made me realize that every time I go online, I’m stepping into a space that can teach me something or connect me with people I never would have met in real life. It made me look at my phone differently, not as a distraction, but as a tool that can help me express myself, grow and even discover who I want to become.

2. All these lessons slowly changed how I act online. I feel more awake and more intentional. I don’t post the way I used to anymore. I think about how my words might make someone feel. I understand the purpose behind campaigns instead of seeing them as trends. And I use new media with more meaning, not just for entertainment. This class didn’t just give me information, it changed my attitude. It made me more responsible, more thoughtful, and more aware of my digital presence.

In the end, Introduction to New Media felt like an emotional reset. It changed the way I see myself, my voice and the digital world I’m part of every day. I no longer feel like someone who is just scrolling through life. I feel like someone who understands the space I’m in, someone who wants to create with purpose and someone who is learning to use new media in a way that lifts me up instead of pulling me along. The journey continues, but now I’m moving with intention, with awareness and with a stronger sense of who I am online.
